Ji Chang-wook (지창욱) was born on July 5, 1987 in Seoul, Korea. He studied at Dankook University, but he knew that his first focus would always be acting. He debuted in 2008 when he appeared in the film “Sleeping Beauty” (슬리핑 뷰티) and on the soap opera “You Stole My Heart” (난 네게 반했어). Then he shined in 2010 when he played the lead part in the TV show “Smile Again” (웃어라 동해야) after which a wide fan base has been built. In 2015, his TV show aired on an Arabic cable channel and captured the hearts of Arab fans. That’s what encouraged the Arab TV personality Ashwaq to interview him on her show “Sabah Al Arabiya,’’ to show how famous he is and how lovable he is to his Arab fans.

Hello everyone. This is Roufida and Nagwan from Egypt and we share a huge passion for Korean music and TV shows, and for soap operas specifically. Actor Ji Chang-wook is one of our favorite actors and when we first heard of his interview, we were anxious about it and so happy that he would get to know his Arab fans.

Roufida: Ji Chang-wook is a very talented actor and his career is full of adverse types of movies and soap operas, but "Smile Again" was the turning point that made him the star he is today. Nagwan, what was the TV show that made you see Ji as a star?

Nagwan: Well, I started following Ji in his TV show “Healer” (힐러) (2014). however, I’m planning to watch ‘’Smile Again‘’ very soon.

Roufida: I’m sure you’re going to love it. It’s about love and ambition. Recently, I finished his drama "Empress Ki" (기황후) (2013). It has been a roller coaster of emotions to the extent that I binge watched the whole show in three days.

Nagwan: Wow, three days! A very short period in which to watch 51 episodes! I hope you enjoyed it. It’s really a masterpiece. I loved the way they amalgamated the history with the romance. MBC and other producers are great at doing those things. I guess it’s the most challenging role Ji ever had. He said so in the interview.

Roufida: Yes he did, maybe because of the filming conditions. Also in the interview, he talked about his fears of being labeled as an action actor and defined by a certain type.

Ji Chang-wook stars in his latest action movie Fabricated City' (조작된 도시) (2017).

Nagwan: Well, in my opinion every actor should do different types of acting, so he can entertain his audience. However, Ji is brilliant in doing action roles. He has the potential to intermingle action with romance. However, as you know, it’s a matter of individual preference.

Roufida: Yes, you’re right. His action TV shows and movies attract me when I want my parents to watch Korean TV so they can learn more about the country. When I tell them that he does most of his own action scenes, they find it impressive, as they both have a passion for taekwondo.

Nagwan: Now I see why you love Ji's work. He’s really one of the best in this category. So, among all his shows, what’s the one you loved the most?

Roufida: I would pick up ‘’Healer.’’ It’s a complete drama, starting with the story, the cast and the performance. Everything was perfect.

Nagwan: I totally agree. It’s my favorite, too. Although, he did say he likes melodrama more than action. Action roles get him very exhausted and he said that he needs to rest for a while afterward.

Roufida: Did you notice his facial expression when Ashwaq Al Atoli asked him about love and friendship?

Nagwan: Oh, yeah, of course I did. He was flattered and flushed. I think they'll begin dating.

Roufida: It seems so. He said that his latest work, “Suspicious Partner” (수상한 파트너), made him feel love and stop searching for friendship. Do you think being a celebrity is a burden for him?

Nagwan: Most celebrities feel bound by their career. They can’t act freely, like us, because of stalkers, reporters and even fans. I hope someday he can find a soul mate. I was astonished when he was surprised to learn that he's popular in Arabic speaking countries. Weren't you?

Roufida: Yes, I was surprised, too. In the show "The K2" (더 케이투), he loved an Arab woman. I thought this role made him aware of his Arab fans. In my opinion, visiting Arab countries and holding fan meetings would actually help him interact and see how many fans he has. People don’t know what they can’t see. It's the best way to experience and get in touch with his fans. Regarding the gifts presented to him, if you were given the chance to offer him a gift, what would it be?

Ji Chang-wook falls in love with an Arab woman in the TV show 'The K2.'

Nagwan: Hmm. I don't know. I think I'd give him a medal with the pyramids on it and his name engraved in Arabic. Hopefully, it would express just how deep my love and appreciation are.

Roufida: Finally, what kind of impression did the interview leave on you regarding his real personality?

Nagwan: I’m going to tell you that I'm interested in horoscopes. He’s a cancer, so that tells us that he’s modest, emotional, shy and also mysterious. Although he appears confident, he can’t get too close to new people that easily.

By the end of this conversation, we both hope he finished his mandatory military service very soon. We can’t wait to see his next TV show.
