On March 12, 2017, Egyptian sports in general and basketball in particular achieved a great victory by winning the FIBA U-19 World Cup in 2017 at the expense of Israel, Italy and Latvia.
The tournament took place in the Hall Complex at the Cairo Stadium in July 2017. It was the first world championship of the second-most popular game in the world, after football or soccer, and the first of its kind to be held anywhere on the African continent. The draw for the FIBA U-19 World Cup was held at the Mohammed Ali Palace in Cairo in July. The Pharaohs were in Group B with Germany, Puerto Rico and Lithuania. Group C was France, New Zealand and South Korea, and the fourth team was selected from the International Federation, which selected Argentina to participate in the tournament. Group C was Canada, Spain, Japan and Mali. Group D was the U.S., Italy, Iran and Angola.
On July 1, New Zealand beat Korea 88-81 in the opening game of the FIBA U-19 World Cup Championship, which was held in the covered hall of the Cairo International Stadium. The tournament took off at 1 p.m. on July 1 between Korea and New Zealand. The match was held in Main Hall No. 1 at the Cairo Stadium. The results period-by-period were 21-15 for New Zealand in the first, 40-39 for Korea in the second, 47-57 for Korea in the third, and 88-81 for New Zealand at the final buzzer. Korea played on July 8 against Japan, while Egypt played against Iran. There were also matches between New Zealand and Mali, and Angola and Puerto Rico. In the quarter finals, the U.S. played Germany and France played Canada. In the other quarter final games, Lithuania played Italy and Argentina played Spain.
On July 1, it was time to go to the Cairo Stadium to watch a basketball match. Ever since we were young, we went to the Cairo Stadium to support our national football team, but it was the first time we went to the stadium to support another team, which was the favorite team in our hearts. It was the Korean team!
This was the first time for Team Korea to come to Egypt. We hoped that they would enjoy the beauty of Egypt and its great civilizations, and we hoped that they would win. Team Korea started with pre-match exercises, unlike the New Zealand team, which danced the Hakka. Then everyone stood in the stadium in respect of the national anthems of both teams. We wished we could sing the anthem with our Korean friends.
There were many Korea fans, as well as some actual Koreans in Cairo. Among them were some professors from Korean language departments at local universities, and they were accompanied by their students. We enjoyed the games with these professors, and they helped us to support Korea with many words of encouragement.
We were happy and cheered when the Korean team scored. Team Korea was ahead most of the match, but unfortunately it didn't win. After the end of the match, the team greeted everyone in the stadium and bowed to them. This is a habit of the Korean people, to show respect for others I hope to see them again, soon.
