Learn Korean vocabulary is hard. Personally, simply memorizing a lot of words isn’t the best for me. Because of that, I decided to look for a way to improve my Korean language abilities, while putting more emphasis on learning complex words, all in order to take the TOPIK Level 2 test in the near future.
A friend once told me that watching Korean game shows is better than watching soap operas if you want to learn more words, because they use more daily vocabulary words and you can practice your listening abilities. I told her that I haven’t tried to watch any game shows. So I started to watch one that could be interesting, and finally I found a show called “Abnormal Summit“ (비정상 회담).
"Abnormal Summit" is a television show on JTBC that features a panel of non-Korean men who live in Korea. They debate various topics about Korean society through the eyes of a non-Korean, all in a talk show format. Also on the show are famous Korean celebrities as guests, and they all discuss various topics together.
My first impression was kind of a shock because the hosts were speaking Korean so well and so fast. They were talking about their life in Korea. I was amazed and interested about their life in Korea because all of them have an interesting occupation, for example models, students at the best universities, salesmen, singers, etc. I became a fan of some them, like Albert who's from Italy, or Peter from Canada, and, of course, Latin America has a representative , too, Cristian from Mexico.
The reason I love this show is because you can learn a lot of useful vocabulary if you're intersted in taking the TOPIK exam. During the show, they talk about cultural exchanges, politics, economics and racism. It could be difficult to learn a formal language through that, but with this show you can at least improve a lot. On the other hand, sometimes they make some mistakes, but the Korean hosts help them learn the correct way to say something, even if some of them have to improve their Korean speaking or listening abilities.
I suggest that if you decide to watch it, you take some notes. After the show, you can review them. If you have great listening abilities, just watch the show without any subtitles.
The show is very interesting and funny because all of the people have a charismatic way to explain something. You're probably not interested in the kinds of topics that they debate, but they are funny and can explain things really easily, so don’t worry if you think you won't be able to understand. You'll learn the opinions that non-Koreans have about Korea and learn about other societies. The show also features Korean celebrities who come on camera to debate with them, for example members of Super Junior or Girls Generation. This also forces them to speak about day-to-day topics. I really enjoy this part of the show because I really appreciate the opinions of my favorite Korean celebrities.
I am inspired to improve my Korean thanks to the host. I hope one day I can speak Korean and express myself just like them.
