I am a student at the Far Easter Federal University and this summer I was sent by my department to be an assistant interpreter for a Busan basketball team that was coming to our city.
Cooperation between Vladivostok and Busan basketball teams began back in the 1990s. Since then, basketball games between Vladivostok teams and Busan teams have been held every year. This time, our city hosted the Busan Chung-Ang High School basketball youth team as part of the 25th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Vladivostok and Busan.
The Busan dialect was a difficulty for me. Every time I talked with the Busan students, I asked them to speak with me in the Seoul dialect.
I used to play basketball when I was in middle school. Now, I'm even considering to attend local basketball matches.
To be honest, I was a bit skeptical about how well the youth teams would play. However, the games were at the highest level. Seriously, the teams all played really well. In particular, the Busan team was technically really great. They just had natural chemistry. I was so into it. It was very interesting to follow the game, especially as a bicultural Korean-Russian you want to root for both the Russian and Korean teams.
As a student, the practice was kind of intense, but I smiled constantly over these days. I met 15 very tall friends from Busan. I remembered how I used to play basketball as a student. Of course, I had some great language practice and just had a great time. It was the best university assignment of my life!
