The second edition of the World Hansik Festival took place on Sept. 28 and 29 in Seoul at Sejong-ro Park. This event, organized by the Hansik Food Foundation and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, aims to make Korean food and culinary heritage known around the world.

An interesting program that included performances, cooking demonstrations and discussion panels showcased the many unique aspects of Korean food. Focusing on traditions and ceremonies, visitors could experience, among other things, wedding ceremony food and traditional alcholic drinks with matching food pairings.

The young farmer and pop-up restaurants were also present for all for the duration of the event. They were both an interesting initiative to promote local produce and new ideas that young entrepreneurs and chefs bring to globally promote Hansik.

We joined the class at the Juansang liquor table  presented by chef Hyeon-Ji Myeong, during which we prepared traditional sweets like seongpyeon and hwajeon and enjoyed them with three different kinds of makgeolli rice beer.

The day continued with a performance by the Painters performance troups and a traditional Korean music concert.

The day ended with a discussion panel about Hansik, with guests from the TV Show “Non-summit” (비정상 회담) Alberto Mondi, Daniel Lindemann and Guillame Patry. They discussed their own experiences and ideas about Korean cuisine and the globalization of the Korean palate.

The two-day event was a great opportunity for people to learn more about Korean food and to experience Korean culinary heritage and traditions. Promoting Korean food globally is an effort that, hopefully, the Korean Food Foundation will pursue consistently in the coming years by organizing more similar events abroad and by collaborating with professionals in the food industry, such as chefs, farmers and food journalist, to reach a wider audience and to explore the many aspects of Hansik.

I look forward to attending the next World Hansik Festival in 2018!
