On Sept. 21, a Korean language contest was held in Guatemala at San Carlos University, with Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador and Panama all participating. Unfortunately, Mexico was unable to attend because of a recent earthquake there.
Prior to the event, a Korean food festival was held among the students and teachers at the institute, and there was a seminar on Korean studies. The contest tests the participants' Korean language abilities, and each participant has to explain what they thought was the biggest treasure of Korea. There were a variety of responses. Some said the Hangeul alphabet, or the friendly warmth and closeness of jeong (정, 情). Some said the Korean flag, or traditional Hanbok attire, or even kimchi. The diversity of the responses were admired by the audience because, although Korea is thousands of kilometers away, they all respect and love Korea.
The event was hosted by Korean language teachers who teach in Paraguay. Paraguay is the first country in Latin America to offer a degree in Korean language. That country had an exchange of experiences, and we hope that soon Guatemala will also be able to open a Korean language center. This would motivate more people to learn Korean and help promote exchanges among countries in Central America.
It's admirable to see the passion of all the students for improving their Korean langauge skills and to see these types of opportunities be good motivation. At the end of the event, Guatemala won the first two places, Nicaragua won third place, and Panama came in fourth. Congratulations to all the participants.
