Hanbok is the traditional attire of Korea. It's a formal dress and most Korean people keep a set of Hanbok for special times in their lives. The beauty of Hanbok is its graceful shape and beautiful colors, which is now having an impact on the modern fashion industry.

Modern Hanbok

For modern Korean people, Hanbok is the formal clothing worn on traditional holidays or on special occasions. Children wear Hanbok on their first birthday and adults wear it for weddings and at their 60th birthday party. Hanbok is also worn for funerals, and is still used as casual wear in agricultural villages or districts where traditional ways of life are maintained.

I was first introduced to Hanbok through historical Korean TV shows. Since then, I've always wanted to wear and own some Hanbok. Thanks to the Korean Cultural Center in Nigeria, I have now had the opportunity to dress in formal Hanbok.

I love modern Hanbok because of its casual look. It makes you always want to wear it, with its vibrant colors.

As someone who likes fashion a lot, I'm inspired by modern Hanbok, so I decided to make a set of modern Hanbok for myself. As a fashion designer who loves Korean heritage and arts, I came up with this project to show my sincere love for the two cultures and to help me identify what's cool about each.

I made a set of Hanbok clothes that combines both Nigeria and Korea, because I am Nigerian and Korean at heart.

I made this set of modern Hanbok using Ankara, a traditional African print pattern, and raw silk. Making the jeogori jacket was a bit difficult because I wanted it to be as flawless as those made by Korean Hanbok designers. The chima skirt was a lot easier for me.

This inspirational Hanbok mixes two identities and reflects the feelings I have for both sets of traditions and sets of fashion norms, all while appreciating them both equally.
