Have you seen the hit Korean soap opera "My Love From the Star" (별에서 온 그대) (2013-2014)? If you haven’t, I highly suggest you watch it. I have watched it, and I loved it so much! That’s why I felt so excited when I heard the news that GMA 7, a Philippine TV channel, was going to produce a local version of the show.

"My Love From the Star" was hugely popular. (SBS)

SBS’s "My Love From the Star" was a drama series that aired in Korea from December 2013 to February 2014. It's about Cheon Song-yi (played by actress Jun Ji-hyun), a beautiful, overconfident, yet popular actress who meets Do Min-joon (played by actor Kim Soo-hyun), an aloof yet kindhearted alien who has been stuck on Earth for 400 years, but who needs to return soon to his planet. It was directed by award-winning director Jang Tae-yoo. The soap opera was first aired in the Philippines in 2014, and was aired again the following year due to popular demand.

The Philippine adaptation was directed by Joyce Bernal, an award-winning director known for making romantic comedy movies and TV shows. She and the producers have carefully selected the cast members, especially the leads. They chose actress Jennylyn Mercado to portray Cheon Song-yi and model Gil Cuerva to play Do Min-joon.

Many people agree that Kim Soo-hyun (left), Korea’s Do Min-joon, and Gil Cuerva, the Philippines’ Do Min-joon, have a resemblance. One of the noticeable differences between the two is their hairstyle. While the Korean version of the character Do Min-joon has short hair, the Philippine Do Min-joon wears his hair long, which was a personal choice of Gil Cuerva. In a way, this gives the Philippine Do Min-joon his own “signature look.” (SBS, Gil Cuerva's Instagram)

This is not the first time that a Korean soap opera remake has been reproduced in the Philippines. Over the years, Filipinos have supported not only Korean dramas, but their Philippine adaptations, as well. In fact, more than a dozen Korean soap operas have already been adapted for Philippine TV by different local TV networks. At first, I was excited, but honestly also a bit nervous, about the Philippine version of "My Love From the Star," not knowing what to expect. With the excellent quality of "My Love From the Star" as a Korean TV show and its success in the Philippines and around the world, I hoped that the producers and the actors of the remake would give justice to the original.

However, my worries started to melt and I only felt pure excitement when I watched the pilot episode of the Philippine "My Love From the Star," which aired on May 29. In general, I could see that the show’s producers tried their best to stay as close as possible to the original Korean version, from the story, dialogue, the characters’ ways and fashion sense, to the way the present-day settings looked.

However, some aspects and scenes in the new show were modified to fit Philippine tastes. For one, the characters’ names were changed to sound more Philippine. For example, Cheon Song-Yi and Do Min-joon became Steffi Chavez and Matteo Domingo. The setting of Do Min-joon’s past life was changed, as well. Do Min-joon’s past takes place in Joseon during the 17th century. Meanwhile, Matteo Domingo’s past is also set in the 1600s, but during the Philippine colonial period.

The remake gained positive feedback from its Philippine audience. On its first night, it even became the number one trending topic on Twitter in the Philippines. Many viewers, including Philippine celebrities, praised the show, especially its visual effects and the acting.

The remake was aired for 11 weeks, and I looked forward to watching every episode. It was very entertaining, with a good combination of light hearted humor, drama and suspense, like the original "My Love From the Star." The lead actors, Jennylyn Mercado and Gil Cuerva, also had undeniably great chemistry.

The final episode of the Philippine remake, which aired on Aug. 11, ended a bit differently than the original. While the main characters in both versions end up happily ever after, Steffi and Matteo are shown getting married, which doesn't happen in the Korean version. I was surprised at this different ending, but I liked it nevertheless. I guess the producers chose to end the Philippine remake this way as Filipinos tend to prefer happy endings.

Overall, congratulations to the cast and staff of the Philippine "My Love From the Star" for a successful run. I hope that in the future Philippine viewers will continue to support both Korean TV shows and their local adaptations.
