November is a month of ghosts and horror stories due to Halloween, the perfect season to watch horror films. As we should already know, Korea is one of the best horror movie-making countries in the world. If you aren't good at watching this kind of movie and, indeed, if you're more of a fan of romance movies, I recommend for you the perfect Korean romance-horror movie this Halloween.
"Spellbound" (오싹한 연애) (2011), from director Hwang In-ho, is a love story between an eccentric magician (played by actor Lee Min-ki) and a lonely girl (actress Son Ye-jin) who has a dark past that allows her to see ghosts. The story begins when the magician discovers in this woman a mysterious personality that he thinks can be useful in his performances, so he invites her to participate in his show. After a while working together, he notices the loneliness in the woman and decides to approach her to the point of falling in love with her. However, this love story is not an easy one. We will see how the darkness that surrounds the lonely woman will become a problem in the relationship, which means that the couple must work hard to overcome the obstacles to finally have a happy ending together.
I was totally impressed and surprised when I discovered this movie years ago. I thought that only the Korean film industry could experiment with such originality as a trans-genre romance-horror-comedy film. The movie faithfully follows the already stablished “love story” plot that we can see in other romance films, and which we love so much. I have to give credit to the interesting mixture, with elements mostly seen in horror movies. When I first read the synopsis, I wasn't sure about the result of such experimental cinema. I was expecting a kind of parody (like Miramax Films' "Scary Movie" in 2000) with funny fake ghosts. Surprisingly, I have to compliment the well-done cinematography here. I totally loved the romantic darkness in the scenography and how they managed the phantasmagoric scenes.
Just as the plot happens to be a unique romance, so, too, are the characters. As I can see, there's a break in the archetypical protagonists. On the one hand, we have a lonely woman who can be described more as dark, strong and mysterious. On the other, the magician, instead of being manly, is rather sensitive and compassionate. The adorable couple is no more than a representation of how love from a generous person can help you to fight your depression. As the expression says, “Fight your own ghosts”.
No doubt, you'll also fall in love with this peculiar and lovable couple, just as I did. The chemistry between the actors makes you sigh in every romantic scene. It's impossible to not feel like an accomplice in their relationship. Besides, with its emotional photography the movie makes us breathe every feeling. It will probably make you cry, laugh and -- of course -- once in a while scream in fear.
If you're not the kind of person who watches horror movies, I invite you to watch this fun romance-horror production and enjoy, as I did, the eccentric love story of "Spellbound" this Halloween.
