It's not a secret that we live in an era of globalization and smart technologies. The world is seeking ways to overcome hunger, stop military threats and to provide clean drinking water in some countries. At the same time, we must think about the future of our planet, Earth, since natural energy resources, like wood, coal, gas or oil, are limited, yet even though some countries still have huge natural supplies. For decades, people have tried to come up with smart solutions for the renewal of energy. Finally, today, we can be proud of our green and eco-friendly energy technologies, like solar panels, water and wind power stations, biofuel, and even projects for obtaining energy from space.
The Astana Expo 2017 is a global exhibition hosted in the Kazakhstani capital. The expo has set itself the task to gather the best developments in these fields to demonstrate not only the future of energy, but also the problematic issues facing developing countries. The expo will run for 93 days. The leading world experts who will meet in Astana will discuss ways to make green energy more available, sustainable, and how to make them the main developmental trend for energy in the decades to come.
One of the most popular and overcrowded pavilions at the expo was the Korea Pavilion. Recently, the number of visitors exceeded 200,000 people. Without any doubt, you wouldn't be disappointed after visiting the Korea Pavilion, since it demonstrates several smart renewable energy choices, like solar energy, energy storage technologies, fuel cell tech for cars, intelligent micro grids, smart energy buildings, smart heating systems, zero energy towns and the Internet of Things (IoT) for the home.
The pavilion itself is divided into three sections: the Seed of Light, 2030 Jeju Island and Energy Citizen. The first section represents a giant eco-friendly megacity whose purpose is to show unlimited energy opportunities for the citizens. A history of Korea's development of various new technologies is projected onto a huge screen. After a presentation-like film ends, the screen turns into a door leading to another section.
The second section helps us to understand the importance of renewable and clean energy technologies in the future through the help of a lovely cartoon created by animators. The main characters in the cartoon are a Kazakhstani boy named Astan who wears traditional Kazakhstani clothes and a Korean girl named Ara who lives on Jeju Island. She helps him realize how precious nature and the environment are. At the end, he decides to exchange his diesel oil engine for solar panels and water energy. Visitors, especially children, were truly impressed by the emotions of the two cartoon characters, even making some children cry.
The last, but not least, section is in the form of a forest consisting of giant white trees. The trees are power stations that can recharge your device in a few minutes. However, that's not the main purpose of the trees. If you bring an iPad, provided by the staff, closer to the trees and choose the type of renewable energy resource you'd like to use, you're given a short animated explanation about how that energy works in Korea. Apart from the main role as energy storage units, the trees look amazingly beautiful and recreate an atmosphere of high tech reality.
The National Day of Korea was held on July 19. All the visitors that day were given a chance to "feel the spirit" of Korean heritage and of Korean modernity. There were several performances, including K-pop music and break dancing, taekwondo and a congratulatory ceremony for the 100,000th visitor to the pavilion featuring a famous actor, So Kang Jun, who together with the cartoon character Pororo was an official goodwill ambassador for the Korean Pavilion at Astana Expo 2017.
On the previous day, July 18, the most overwhelming and popular event of the whole exhibition took place. The K-culture Party was held at the biggest cycling stadium in Astana, the Saryarka. The concert was organized by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). The headliners of the concert were famous Korean pop singers -- Highlight, AOA and B1A4 -- and young Kazakhstani bands like Ninety-One and Black Dial. They represented "Q-pop," a newly created form of music these days in Kazakhstan. The majority of the spectators were young Kazakhstani girls and boys interested in K-pop, so the audience was welcoming singers with almost never-ending joy and happiness, just like their Korean peers.
The expo continued until Sept. 10. People had to wait for several hours in order to get into the Korean Pavilion, yet it was still worth waiting.
