Halloween is here and there's nothing better than to spend some time watching horror movies and to get in the mood for Oct. 31. Because we know that the Korean film industry is one of the best at making horror stories and at keeping the audience in suspense, I made a list of 10 great movies with the trendiest horror topics that you shouldn't miss this season.

"The Host" is a 2006 Korean film about a monster, directed by Bong Joon-ho. (Showbox)

Giant creatures

Since several years ago, horror movies have developed based on old tales. One of these classic stories is the giant creature story that threatens a whole population. Just like Godzilla, Seoul has a monster in the Hangang River that threatens to destroy the entire city. I recommend "The Host" (괴물) (2006) by the excellent director and master of computer graphics Bong Joon-ho.

Vampires

From Dracula until today, vampires are so popular that it's even an unexpected genre. The amazing director and master of horror Park Chan-wook bring us a deep story of faith, humanity and desire behind the vampire tale in "Thirst" (박쥐) (2009).

Ghosts

Ghosts are one of the most powerful themes in horror movies. Of course, nothing is scarier than things we cannot see. Because one tale isn't enough, here I introduce you to the ghost franchise of "Whispering Corridors" (여고괴담). The franchise starts with director Park Ki-hyung and "Whispering Corridors" (여고괴담) (1998). Then comes co-directors Kim Tae-yong and Min Kyung-dong with "Memento Mori" (여고괴담 두번째 이야기) (1999). Third is director Yun Jae-yeon's "Wishing Stairs" (여고괴담 3: 여우계단) (2003). Fourth is Choi Ik-Hwan's "Voice" (여고괴담 4: 목소리) (2005) and fifth is Lee Jong-yong's "A Blood Pledge" (여고괴담 5: 동반자살) (2009).

Psychoses

One of the most terrifying things is the human mind, something that we can easily understand in the Korean horror movie industry. Director Kim Jee-woon produced this spectacular movie with amazing music and incredible cinematography that will immerse you in total suspense for 114 minutes. A movie that totally can blow your mind is "A Tale of Two Sisters" (장화, 홍련) (2003).

Serial killers

Serial killers are the real horror of human history, and the Korean film industry knows it. Director Kim Jee-woon, again, exploits this theme to its fullest, filling the audience with dread in every scene and demonstrating with an unpredictable plot that the human is the scariest thing in the world. I highly recommend "I Saw the Devil" (악마를 보았다) (2010).

Pandemics

Coughs, fevers, scars, bloody bodily fluids and, finally, death: these are the commonest steps that occur in pandemic movies. Director Kim Sung-su created this movie, based on today's bird flu epidemic: a nightmarish movie about mass hysteria and disgusting symptoms. This is "Flu" (감기) (2013).

Witch craft

Black magic, spells and Ouija boards are all dark stuff from which we're supposed to keep away, even if it looks fun. Getting into that kind of stuff always brings more and more troubles, just as director Ahn Byeong-ki wants to show us in the movie "Witch Board" (분신사바) (2004).

Diabolical dolls

Dolls are not always cute, in some cases they can become monsters under the bed of our childhood. Director Jeong Yong-ki brings us a whole deeper and creepier story about friendship, dolls and anger with his movie "Doll Master" (인형사) (2004).

Zombies

Dead people coming alive is another classic tale that happens to be very popular nowadays. In the past the stories didn't include hordes of zombies, but these days, zombies represent an image of our hopeless future that's strictly connected with sickness and the end of the world. Just as director Yeon Sang-ho wants to show us in the first and really successful Korean zombie movie, go watch this story that goes beyond dehumanization, "Train to Busan" (부산행) (2016).

Cursed objects

In the olden days, tales always included some cursed object, something that at the beginning looks safe but at the end will kill you. Director Kim Yong-gyun takes a famous tale from Hans Christian Andersen and develops it into a spooky narrative of greed and vengeance in "The Red Shoes" (분홍신) (2005).

Gore

Solely for horror movie lovers and for people who have a really strong stomach, I've added one extra movie that has liters of blood and pain, directed by Im Dae-woong: "To Sir, With Love" (스승의 은혜) (2006).
